Q. A shopkeeper offers two consecutive discounts—first 10% and subsequently 5% on a certain item. The equivalent discount offered on the item is

(ADRE 2024)

(A) 12·5%

(B) 15%

(C) 13%

(D) 14·5%

Ans:- (D) 14·5%

Solution:-

Let’s assume the original price of the item is Rs. 100.

First discount: 10% of 100 = Rs. 10 Price after the first discount = 100 – 10 = Rs. 90

Second discount: 5% of 90 = Rs. 4.5 Final price after both discounts = 90 – 4.5 = Rs. 85.5

Total discount: 100 – 85.5 = Rs. 14.5

Equivalent discount percentage: (14.5/100) × 100 = 14.5%

Therefore, the equivalent discount offered on the item is 14.5%.
