The Poona Pact was an agreement between Mahatma Gandhi and B R Ambedkar. It was signed in the Yerwada Central Jail, Poona on September 24th, 1932. Ambedkar signed it on behalf of the depressed classes and Madan Mohan Malviya on behalf of Hindus and Gandhi. The Poona Pact abandoned the idea of separate electorates for the depressed classes. It introduced joint electorates with reserved seats for the Depressed Classes. The states reserved for the depressed classes were increased from 71 to 147 in the provincial legislature and to 18 percent of the total in the Central Legislature. The British Government accepted the Poona Pact as an amendment to the Communal Award.
